Lakers 91, Bobcats 87: By the Numbers

58668191A total of 66 fouls and 43 turnovers considerably slowed L.A.’s 91-87 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats in Saturday’s preseason game, though in the absence of Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Luke Walton due to minor injuries, it’s difficult to draw many conclusions from the fourth preseason game.

Prior to the contest, L.A.’s first at STAPLES Center, Phil Jackson said that he expects all three of his regulars to be fine by the start of the regular season on October 27; in the meantime, Andrew Bynum was again efficient and effective with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, Josh Powell added 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench and Kobe Bryant chipped in 13 points with seven assists.

To detail the game’s ins and outs, we let the numbers do the talking for the now 3-1 Lakers:

586682101 L.A.’s lead with 11 seconds remaining when Vladimir Radmanovic (traded from L.A. to Charlotte last February for Adam Morrison and Shannon Brown) hit a three to cut what had been a comfortable lead. However, Powell made 1-of-2 free throws, and Jordan Farmar stole Charlotte’s ensuing inbounds pass before hitting two from the charity stripe to seal the win.

2 Lakers turnovers in the first half, compared to eight from the Bobcats, numbers L.A.’s head coach was quite happy about. Of course, he was equally unhappy with L.A.’s 19 second half turnovers.

3 The number of regulars missing the game, with Gasol (hamstring), Walton (back) and Odom (shin) nursing minor injuries. Jackson said after the game that none of his three frontcourt players will play in L.A.’s Sunday evening contest.

4 Field goals, including three three-pointers, nailed by Sasha Vujacic in six attempts as the Slovenian continues his excellent shooting form in four preseason games. He’s now converted 11-of-15 shots (73.3 percent), which includes a full-court heave to end the third quarter of L.A.’s Thursday win in Vegas that Vujacic is quick to point out shouldn’t count against his stats.

5 Free throws missed by Ron Artest in as many attempts. Artest struggled in his nearly 18 minutes of play, scoring five points with three boards before fouling out with roughly six minutes remaining. Shannon Brown also struggled with his shot, though from the field, in missing all six of his attempts.

6 Shots attempted by Bryant in the first quarter. Bryant looked to be trying out a variety of shots (including a left-handed turnaround baby hook) and moves upon which he’s worked throughout the offseason and training camp, perhaps testing for the regular season. You know, preseason heat checks…

586682167 Assists handed out by Bryant, which gave him a team-high 17 in L.A.’s four games.

12 Point differential for the Lakers in a 17-5 run that turned a 21-17 deficit into a 34-26 lead halfway through the second quarter. Powell, Jordan Farmar and Vujacic were primarily responsible. Also the number of straight points scored by the Lakers out of the second half gate, turning a 46-39 halftime score into a 19-point lead.

20 Personal fouls called in the third quarter alone, leading to 23 collective free throw attempts in a slow-moving game that featured 66 total fouls.

37.5 Charlotte’s shooting percentage for the game on 27-of-72 as the Lakers were quite active on defense.

73.7 Combined shooting percentage from Andrew Bynum (6-for-8), Josh Powell (4-of-5) and Sasha Vujacic (4-of-6) to lead the Lakers.

D.J. Mbenga Injury Update

DJ MbengaLast week, Phil Jackson explained that D.J. Mbenga had not been able to participate fully in practice due to an injury, which Lakers spokesman John Black detailed on Monday:

Due to a malalignment of his hips/ hip flexors, the imbalance is causing him pain in his abdominal, groin and hip flexor areas. He continues to work with our training staff to rehabilitate and is expected to make a full recovery at some point in the near future.

***10/6 UPDATE - Phil Jackson said that Mbenga practiced for the first time in five days on Tuesday, and should be fully operational soon.

Vujacic Checks In

Sasha VujacicSeeing Sasha Vujacic shoot the basketball after Lakers practice has concluded is like seeing Lady Gaga in a ridiculous outfit … It’s all but a guarantee.

It was no different on Saturday afternoon at L.A.’s facility, as the Slovenian ran through a series of shooting drills with assistant coach/advance scout Rasheed Hazzard. Afterwards, Vujacic told us about his health, his shot and Ron Artest:

On how he’s feeling: I feel good, I feel excited. It’s been four days now, and I think everyone’s a little bit tired, but we’re pushing through it and working really hard heading into our first game on Wednesday. Last year I missed the whole training camp after injuring myself on the first day, but heading into this year I had been doing a lot of rehab and everything looks good right now.

On his shooting It will be better on October 27, but right now it’s OK. Obviously last year I didn’t shoot the ball the way I was supposed to or the way I can, but this year I’m not even thinking about that. I know what I can do and how to do it, so I’m just going to take the right shots and it will work out.

On playing some point guard in practice: I think Phil (Jackson) has been training me throughout my years here to play both guard positions, and I’m lucky to be able to do it. I’ve learned a lot, and each year become more mature. Last season and this summer helped me from that point of view, and having Kobe (Bryant) on my side, calming me down sometimes, is good for me. I like both positions, and wherever Phil needs me, that’s where I’ll play.

On if anyone has stood out to him in practice: I think everyone came into camp prepared. It’s no secret that Ron (Artest) is a new player to us, and he’s just a very, very strong man. That’s the way he plays. I think he fits in pretty well with us - his toughness and his defensive skills are incredible and that’s something we needed, something that will benefit us throughout the season and into the playoffs. He (guarded me today) and he’s like a train coming at you. That’s good though, I like it.

Artest Climbs the Ladder

Andrew Bynum: World Traveler

Andrew BynumOn media day, Lakers center Andrew Bynum told us (on video) about his training habits from the summer, which included a great deal of leg-strengthening work in Atlanta, and shared his goal of becoming an All Star.

Two days later, Bynum talked a bit more hoops - mentioning that he’s fully comfortable shooting out to 17 feet - but also revealed himself to be a world traveler. In fact, the 21-year-old detailed his journey through Italy, Spain, Japan and China that took place after he won his first NBA title.

His favorite stop?

“I love Rome,” he said. “I liked Barcelona, which is just like L.A., but I liked Rome because of the history there. The art is unbelievable, and then walking around during the sunset is crazy. I went all over, we did a whole bunch of sight-seeing and saw a bunch of stuff.”

Bynum said that he particularly appreciated the Vatican, but in somewhat of an upset, said he prefered Spain when it came to food.

“I like paella a lot (in Spain),” said the seven-footer. “I’m very American when it comes to eating Italian food. I really don’t like the way they serve it over there, where they do a salad, a pasta with nothing in it and then the meat comes after. I like to throw everything in and have it really sauced up.”

Being a rigatoni-with-marinara-and-chicken guy, I can respect that.

Via L.A.’s PR Staff:

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed forwards Tony Gaffney, David Monds, Mickael Gelebale and Michael Fey, as announced (on Monday). Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not released.

Gaffney, an undrafted forward out of Massachusetts, finished his senior year at UMASS averaging a double-double with 11.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The 6-8 forward was ranked 3rd in the nation in blocked shots (3.8) and was named the 2009 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year. Most recently Gaffney was a member of the 2009 Lakers summer league team where he averaged 3.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in four games played.

Monds, a 6-9 forward out of Oklahoma State, was a member of the Lakers 2009 summer league squad where he scored 14.0 points and pulled down 5.2 rebounds in five games. The Georgia native spent last season playing in the NBA Development League as a member of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds where he averaged 13.4 points and 9.6 rebounds before finishing out the season with the Dakota Wizards.

Gelabale, a 6-7 forward from France, finished the 2008-09 season as a member of the Los Angeles D-Fenders where he averaged 16.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in six games played. Prior to his stint in the NBA D-League, Gelabale spent two seasons (2006-08) with the Seattle SuperSonics where he averaged 4.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in 15.6 minutes.

Fey, a 7-0 forward/center out of UCLA, played all four seasons at UCLA where he averaged 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 54.6% from the field. The former Bruin spent the 2008-09 season playing for Al Shabab (United Arab Emirates).

The Lakers training camp roster now stands at 17 players.

Phil Jackson: 2009-10 Intro Presser

Phil Jackson Game ShotMedia day is still three days away, but that didn’t keep Phil Jackson from sitting down at L.A.’s practice facility on Friday to provide a little teaser for a hungry group of journalists that assembled in El Segundo.

It was a busy summer in Laker Land, featuring the 15th championship celebration for the franchise, the return of Jackson for another run, the acquisition of Ron Artest, the re-signing of Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown, Pau Gasol’s finger injury and subsequent MVP award in the European Championships, an assemblance of most of L.A.’s young players at the practice facility and, sure, Odom’s weekend wedding.

Alas, as Jackson was talking, we did our best to follow along with the fingers moving:

- The Coach opened by answering a question about his T-Mobile commercial, citing that he goes “way back” with Jesse James because James was a companian of Dennis Rodman’s. Your usual soft opener.

- The first comment Phil had regarding the coming basketball season was that the team wanted to “make the transition for Ron Artest seamless,” adding that Artest is “The defensive player we’ve wanted over the course of the last couple of years. Defense is going to be the item of the day.” Jackson also mentioned that he doesn’t think Artest’s presence will disrupt the offense: “Our game is not predicated on calling plays, it’s about the players reading the game and trying to get the ball to the open man.”

- Jackson neglected to talk about his contract after the coming season, saying he hasn’t talked to Jerry Buss.

- On Kurt Rambis taking the Timberwolves’ head coaching position: “I don’t think a person particularly (will replace him) but the do-it-all nature that he had has to be picked up by some people. I’ll have to spend a little more time working with the big guys, and the staff will have to take on the defensive responsibility that Kurt had. We’ll miss that but we’re (happy he had the opportunity in Minnesota).”

- Jackson agreed that his frontcourt foursome of Bynum-Gasol-Artest-Odom is easily the most talented he’s ever had, and cited the Portland team in 2000 as the last big foursome that had similar on-paper talent.

- On distractions regarding certain players’ off court interests: “It will be something we have to talk about. There’s a certain amount of privacy that we have to demand from (the players) and I think these guys are professional. They’ll understand it.” Jackson said one difference between his Bulls days and now is the media climate, including Twitter, TMZ and constant internet coverage.

- There will be restrictions for players in terms of social media from the team. “There are things they’ll have to be cognizant of.”

- Jackson said he is going to Lamar Odom’s much-reported wedding. “I’m very supportive of Lamar and want everything to go right for him.”
