J-Peezy’s Playlist

Josh PowellWell, actually, it was one of my playlists to which Lakers forward Josh Powell offered his musical ear. A great music mind, Peezy used to play the drums, piano and guitar.

“I’m the best at all of them,” he explained.

Alas, on this six-game road trip, we stopped by Powell’s room to talk mostly about hip-hop before moving onto some R&B and classic rock. Powell also offered some of his current favorite songs that might improve our playlist, and then challenged me to a Guitar Hero contest that he wants to put on YouTube. So we’ll get to that later. Until then, here’s the podcast:

Don’t worry folks … We’ll check back in with JP later in the trip to see what else is on his musical mind.

Lakers Acquire Hayden Simone Powell

Looking for additional quickness, depth and smooth skin in the backcourt, the Lakers signed newborn Hayden Simone Powell on Tuesday evening at 10:37 p.m. in New Orleans.

Hayden’s listed measurements are (an athletic) 7.1 pounds and 19 3/4 inches. It wasn’t all smooth sailing at first, however, as the Lakers had to throw in a few crates of Gerber’s Apple Sauce to ensure that Hayden would make a hand print on the contract.

Proud father Josh Powell, who already boasts a talented young daughter, Patience, with his wife Lauren, couldn’t be happier to welcome Hayden into the organization.

“I’m very proud I have two wonderful, beautiful girls,” said Powell.

Josh is just a tad bigger than his new daughter at 6-9, 240 pounds, but it’s already clear that his athletic instincts have been passed on.

“Sure, Hayden might be on the small side of the league, but she’s extremely agile,” said a source close to the team. “I don’t think anyone in the NBA can match up with Hayden size wise, though Nate Robinson may come the closest.”

“Yeah, I mean, I can’t think of any reason why L.A. doesn’t make that acquisition,” added Lakers radio voice Spero Dedes. “I think I speak for everybody when I say that we’re all excited to see how Phil Jackson employs Hayden into the rotation.”

Lauren, Hayden and Patience will hang out in New Orleans to gloat over L.A.’s 100-87 win for a few days, while Josh will return to join his teammates in Los Angeles heading into the Christmas Day game against Boston.

Welcome to the family, Hayden!

Powell Family Expecting New Baby Girl

Josh PowellGet ready for an understatement: Josh Powell has a lot on his mind … And Chris Paul driving into the paint during Tuesday evening’s game in New Orleans isn’t even close to the top of his thought list.

Let’s just say that Powell has something a bit more personal happening … He and his wife Lauren are expecting their second daughter tonight.

“I’m almost speechless,” an excited Powell told me before the game. “Her name will be Hayden Simone, and if she doesn’t come during the game, then after the game for sure.”

His wife Lauren, who’s from New Orleans, is in the hospital with family right now; the Powell’s first daughter, Patience, will soon be welcoming a new baby sister.

“That’s your family, so that’s always your biggest concern,” Josh continued. “But I’m (at the arena) because I want to support the team and I understand the mission that we have this year. I want to show my dedication towards my team, and then get to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Congrats in advance, Josh!

Powell will stay with his family in New Orleans tonight, and return to Los Angeles on Wednesday to rejoin the team.

Jackson, Powell Pregame Audio

Before the first of four “Battle for L.A.” - eh, on second thought, that’s kind of a lame phrase - takes place at STAPLES Center, we put a mic in front of Lakers head coach Phil Jackson and forward Josh Powell.

To the media, Jackson emphasized his team’s need to continue what was a terrific defensive effort on opening night, and said that he and his staff think they understand what the Clippers are going to bring to the table.

Afterwards, I spent a few minutes with Powell (and Young Geezy) since he played for the Clips last year, even though only five players remain from their 2007-08 roster.

Here’s Phil & JP:

Jackson: Bryant, Vujacic to Play

Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said prior to Friday evening’s game in Ontario that both Kobe Bryant and Sasha Vujacic would play against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Jackson expects Vujacic to see significant time after missing the previous seven preseason games with his ankle injury, while Bryant will play just enough to keep his hyperextended knee - which is apparently close to 100 percent already - loose.

While some question whether Bryant should even test the knee in a relatively meaningless preseason game, Jackson said that Bryant knows his body well enough at this stage of his career to make such a decision.

Certainly both pieces of information regarding Kobe and Sasha are good news for the Lakers. On the other hand, forward Josh Powell will be held out of tonight’s game due to the same strained left hamstring that caused him to miss Thursday night’s win against Charlotte. Powell did tell me that he’s “definitely” going to be ready for the season opener, and we’ll see if the training staff concurs next week.

Kobe, Sasha and JP Injury Update

Kobe Bryant, Sasha Vujacic and Josh Powell will all be in street clothes for L.A.’s Thursday evening contest between the Lakers and Charlotte Bobcats.

  • Bryant said before the game that his knee is a little sore, but he remains quite pleased that the hyperextension was nothing at all serious. He’s listed as day-to-day, and could possibly play tomorrow night in Ontario … Though we shouldn’t be shocked if he doesn’t. We’ll certainly be shocked if he doesn’t start in Tuesday’s season opener.
  • Vujacic, on the other hand, told me that he is going to play tomorrow night, as he’s intent upon getting at least one preseason game under his belt before the regular season opener against Portland.
  • Offseason acquisition Powell suffered a strained left hamstring Tuesday night in San Diego, and is also day-to-day.
  • Phil Jackson Practice Notes

Notes from Phil Jackson’s post-practice media session on 10/01/08

  • When asked about Andrew Bynum’s performance so far Phil replied “Don’t ask”, but eventually elaborated (slightly) by saying “I thought Andrew was tired today so I don’t want to say anything about it.”
  • Although the Lakers are currently running two-a-day practices, by league mandate they are only allowed three and a half hours of actual practice time with contact. The rest of the time is used learning offensive patterns, defensive slide drills and conditioning. Phil mentioned that he wouldn’t mind having one long session, but the team’s fitness level isn’t up to that right now.
  • Trevor Ariza’s jump shot is being described by Jackson as adequate. “I don’t think anybody’s going to consider him a threat. I think he’s got an adequate jump shot that can keep people honest with it. I’m impressed with his abilities to make the jump shot. However, that’s not the strength of his game. His game’s going to be getting out there, being a slasher.”
  • On Josh Powell: “He’s impressed us a lot. He’s coming in playing hard. He’s got a lot of tenacity. He refuses to be boxed out. You’ve got to really put an effort into keeping him off the boards. He’s creating a lot of problems with our big guys, they know they’ve got a tiger down there after the rebound. He seems to have an idea of what we’re trying to do even though he’s only been here for one day. He seems relatively comfortable playing in our offense.”
