Andrew Bynum continues to garner league-wide attention for his vastly improved play to open up the season, highlighted by his dominating 20 point, 11 rebound, 5 block game versus the Warriors on Sunday.

Although there’s not much difference between this season’s start for the Lakers, compared to a year ago, Coach Phil Jackson’s current team has been turning heads around the league because of the play of center Andrew Bynum.

For Bynum, 20, the more he’s able to show Jackson that he can play against a variety of lineups is a plus with the increased number of NBA teams showing quick lineups like Golden State.

Lakers Coach Phil Jackson and San Antonio Spurs Coach Greg Popovich will wear microphones during TNT’s Thursday night broadcast of the Lakers v. Spurs game as part of a new league-mandated policy requiring coaches to wear microphones for nationally televised games.

The Lakers slapped on their uniforms from the 1987-1988 championship team last night versus the Warriors, but stopped just short of wearing the short shorts worn in the past.

“No hot pants,” Odom said before the game. No, the teams wouldn’t go so far as to return to the short shorts of yesteryear.

Andrew Bynum apparently heard Phil Jackson’s complaints, responding to his challenge by matching his career high with 20 points against the Warriors on Sunday.

“I just had to give him a little bit of a jolt the other day because he wasn’t at practice on time to work with Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar]when he’s supposed to work with Kareem,” Jackson said.

Bynum also elicited more praise from Lakers leader Kobe Bryant.

“He’s playing excellent ball,” Bryant said.

Kobe Bryant was back at practice Saturday afternoon after resting Friday to rest his sore left shoulder.

Kwame Brown was also back in action, although it was just on treadmill.

“Hopefully, I can play by the Clippers game (Dec. 16). So we’ve got all (this) week. That’s my goal, anyway.”

Is 50 wins out of the question for this club? Phil Jackson seems to think so.

“We haven’t really started to do some of the other structural things we want to do with the team,” said Jackson, who agreed to a two-year contract extension on the day of the Denver game. “We need to open a run again and find a way to win two or three games in a row and get some momentum.”

It’s been hard for the Lakers to string together a sustained win-streak that is the hallmark of the dominant teams in the NBA, but the schedule hasn’t been doing them any favors either. 11-8 doesn’t look too shabby after facing the second toughest schedule in the NBA through 19 games. Putting together such a streak could become easier with a heavy dose of the East coming up over the next month.

Phil also took sometime to downplay Andrew Bynum’s early season success, which came as news to the big man.

“He’s gone backward since the season started,” Jackson said. “He hasn’t had consistent playing time and misses a game . . . it’s a little bit troubling.”

News of Bynum’s regression, though, was news to Bynum.

“I haven’t taken a step back,” Bynum said. “I don’t feel that way.”

Bynum, the team’s leading rebounder in his third NBA season since being drafted out of high school, said he put in a lot of work during the summer to get in shape.

“I’ve been progressing,” he said. “I think I’ve been doing all right all season, except for the last game — I was recovering from food poisoning.”

Luke Walton is listed as questionable for tonight’s game after injuring his ankle in Friday’s practice. An article in today’s LA Times mentions that Luke has moved away from the beach (after selling his townhome to Kings rising star Jack Johnson) in favor of a bigger place east of Sepulveda, near where Kurt Rambis & Brian Shaw live. Until I get that six-year extension I’ll staying in my current west of Sepulveda shack.

On a final note, a former Laker is finding it harder to maintain his elite play into his late 30s, as Mark Heisler details.

The Lakers avoided what could have been a very scary end to practice yesterday as a couple guys hit the deck hard, causing Phil Jackson to whistle an end to practice.

As noted in yesterday’s practice reports, Ronny Turiaf collided with Javaris Crittenton, resulting in both laying on the floor for longer than anyone was comfortable with. Then just minutes later Luke Walton went down as he was backpedaling on defense.

Ronny and Javaris didn’t seem to be suffering any ill effects after practice, with Ronny saying he’s ready to go for Sunday. Walton was still limping slightly after practice and got hit ankle taped by the team’s training staff. His status for Sunday is unknown.

Kobe avoided the ruckus by not practicing during Friday’s session. His shoulder is still sore from the fall he took Wednesday at Denver, but expects to play on Sunday. Overall he’s just feeling lucky that he didn’t get hurt any worse than he did.

The Lakers return to the practice floor Saturday afternoon in preparation for Sunday’s game with the scorching hot Golden State Warriors.

The spotlight will fall squarely on Andrew Bynum tonight as Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic roll into STAPLES Center. The first overall pick from the 2004 draft has blossomed into one of the most dominate big men in the league in just his 4th season–much the same way the Lakers hope Bynum will continue to progress.

Bynum is second in the league in dunks this season with 34. Howard leads the league with 81. That’s quite a disparity.

“He’s a beast now, pretty much like the new Shaq,” Bynum said of Howard. “If he gets anything by that restricted area [near the basket], you’re in trouble.”

Bynum and Howard are friends off the court (there was talk last summer of Drew heading back east to work with Howard), but tonight’s matchup should tell us a lot about where Bynum is in his development process.

Lakers rookie guard Javaris Crittenton is also very familiar with Howard. The two were teammates at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy and won a state title together.

Bynum will be primarily responsible for Howard tonight. Kwame Brown is still on the shelf with ankle and knee injuries and Chris Mihm still trying to find his way after missing the majority of two seasons.

Mihm has found the recovery process to be as lengthy as advertised.

“I’d like it to feel 100 percent and not be something I have to worry about on a daily basis, but it’s not that way right now,” Mihm said.

“Whenever I talk to my doctors and my rehab people, they say I’m right on schedule. It’s a process.”

It’s simply taking longer than Mihm would like.

When you watch the games you can see Mihm getting to the right spots and making the smart plays, but his athleticism just isn’t there yet. It’s been tough for him to get the same kind of lift he had before his injury and his game hasn’t adjusted to it.

Orlando went out and spent a lot of money on Rashard Lewis this summer. So far Lewis has been okay, but not max-deal good.

‘There will be some nights when I’m going to struggle, some nights when Turk [Hedo Turkoglu] is going to struggle and some nights when Dwight [Howard] is going to struggle,’ Lewis said. ‘The great players come out of their slump and continue to play regardless of what people are saying. I’m not worried about it at all.

‘It’s happened to me before. And I’ve gotten out of it.’

And how do you do that?

Lewis smiled and shrugged.

‘Keep shooting. Don’t think about it. Don’t hesitate. Because if you stop shooting the ball, then you really put yourself in a slump.’

The Lakers meet up with AI, Melo, and the rest of the Denver Nuggets tonight at STAPLES Center (7:30, TNT).

The Nuggets have lost their last two games (at Houston, vs. Indiana), but still sport a 9-6 record that puts them just ahead of the Lakers in the Western Conference playoff race. Denver finished as the 6th seed last season, while the Lakers were the 7th seed.

The Nuggets are all kinds of banged up, but could get oft-injured forward Kenyon Martin back tonight. Former Laker Chucky Atkins has been ruled out of the game with a severe groin strain, as have big men Nene & Steven Hunter.

The Nuggets still have Marcus Camby–last year’s Defensive Player of the Year–manning the paint. The Bynum/Camby matchup should be fun to watch when the Lakers have the ball. Bynum continues to blossom, but Camby is averaging 3.5 blocks and close to 15 rebounds a game.

After being the bright spot of the team in the early going, the Lakers reserves have struggled to find their way after the trade to acquire Trevor Ariza and Drew moving to the first unit in Kwame Brown’s absence. It raises the question of “Who Starts?”

Getting back in the win column is never a bad thing, but last night’s win could have been better… in almost every way.

Being tied at the half with the team owning the worst record in the NBA isn’t a way to inspire confidence throughout the season. The Lakers looked to right the ship as they came out strong in the third, taking a 12-point lead by the end of the quarter. The ship began to tilt again in the fourth though when the Sonics crept within five points before the Lakers eventually took control to win 106-99.

The Lakers have the day off practice today because of league mandated meetings. They get back at it tomorrow night against the Denver Nuggets at STAPLES Center (7:30pm, TNT).

Somethings got to give tonight as the Supersonics ride their four-game losing streak into STAPLES Center to face the Lakers and their own three-game losing streak (tonight at 7:30 on FSN HD).

A visit from the 2-12 Sonics couldn’t come at a better time for the Lakers as they desperately need a win before facing upper echelon teams in their next three games–Thursday vs. Denver, Friday at Utah, & Sunday vs. Orlando).

It was a slow day in Lakerland yesterday as the team used Saturday as a travel day; making the cross country flight from Boston back home to Los Angeles.

Most of the talk in the media surrounded Andrew Bynum and his continued maturation into a dominant big man. Like last season, Bynum seems to have taken another step in his progression and has impressed early this season, but has also struggled to stay on the court due to fouls.

For every two steps forward there is one minor step back as he continues to figure out how to use his 7-foot frame to his advantage in the NBA.

Friday’s game was an example of stepping back. Celtic’s Center Kendrick Perkins, more known for his defensive prowess than anything, went for 21-points and added a dangerous fourth to Boston’s already “Big Three”.

The Lakers 107-94 loss didn’t exactly re-spark the classic NBA rivalry that’s laid dormant since the late 80s.

Boston gave out “BEAT LA” shirts at the door and, thanks to the Lakers shooting just 25% in the first quarter, the shirts looked to be prophetic.

Boston’s new “Big Three” got theirs, but it was Center Kendrick Perkins that killed the Lakers with 21 points and 9 boards.

Lamar Odom continued to look out of sync just two nights after critizing his poor play against the Bucks. Odom remains in his own state of Training Camp after missing the team’s practice sessions while recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.
