Inactives for Tonight’s Game:
Jazz: Almond Morris, Kyrylo Fresenko
Lakers: Coby Karl, Andrew Bynum, Trevor Ariza
1st Quarter:
12:00 Kobe gets a raucous standing ovation from the gold-clad crowd after receiving his first MVP award from NBA Commissioner David Stern. After thanking the crowd, Kobe screamed, “Let’s get this party started!”
10:57 The Lakers hit their first two shots of the game, the first a near three pointer by Fisher and the second, a jumper by Radmanovic that hits nothing but net. It’s only been a minute, but the Lakers look focused and ready to play, easing any initial concerns about a hangover effect from the pre-game MVP ceremony.
9:11 Mr. MVP hits his second consecutive shot to open the game, the first on a driving reverse layup and the second on one of his signature fadeaway jumpers. The STAPLES Center is buzzing early–much more so than they were in Game 1. Kobe is tied with Lamar for the early lead in scoring with four.
1st Quarter:
10:58 Lamar gets the Lakers on the board with a driving dunk after a great pass by Kobe. Odom’s basket comes after consecutive Jazz layups, the first by Boozer and the second by Kirilenko. The STAPLES Center crowd is buzzing every time Kobe touches the ball, obviously amped up about the expected announcement that he’s won the MVP award.
8:20 Fisher delivers his second straight perfect pass to Pau in the lane, both resulting in uncontested layups. After the Jazz scored the first four points of the game, the Lakers have come roaring back with nine straight points. Gasol and Kobe are tied for the team lead in scoring with four a piece.
6:33 Turiaf checks into the game for the time today, replacing Gasol who just picked up his second personal foul.
5:40 Jackson calls timeout after the Jazz are in the middle of a mini 9-4 run of their own to tie the score at 13 with a little less than half of the first quarter remaining. Carlos Boozer has dominated L.A. in the point so far, tallying six points on three of four shooting to lead the Jazz.
As mentioned last time, I’m in Denver… and there’s no way I’m pulling off a full In-Game blog like at the home games, so you’ll be getting some random notes during the game. Check back for the latest.

Inactives for Today’s Game:
Nuggets: Taurean Green, Bobby Jones
Lakers: Andrew Bynum, Trevor Ariza, Ronny Turiaf
1st Quarter:
10:56 Fisher starts off the scoring for both teams, stealing the ball from Martin before taking it to about the free throw line and drilling a jumper that sends a raucous STAPLES Center crowd to their feet. Derek had a quiet opening game so look for him to come out with a much stronger effort in Game 2.
8:30 Kobe gets his first two of the game, confidently shooting over Martin for an eight footer that falls in off the backboard. On the Lakers’ ensuing possession, Bryant nailed a long range jumper that puts him at 2-3 on the night from the field. The Nuggets still lead early though 10-9.
6:41 After a wild sequence of bobbled balls following Gasol’s miss in the lane, the center finally regains control of the ball and throws up one of his signature baby hooks for his first points of the night. Pau also had two rebounds on the night to lead the Lakers almost halfway through the first quarter.
Inactives for Today’s Game:
Nuggets: Taurean Green, Bobby Jones
Lakers: Andrew Bynum, Trevor Ariza, Coby Karl
1st Quarter:
10:59 Radmanovic gets the Lakers on the board first, taking the nice pass and laying it in off glass. Both teams look focused early on, with two full out dive-and-scramble to the floor plays in the opening minute alone. Two Denver starters have also picked up early fouls, with Anthony and Martin tallying one a piece.
9:52 Walton replaces Vladi in the Lakers lineup after the forward picked up his first foul.
7:57 Odom makes an incredible pass to a streaking Gasol who hammers it home and gets the sold out STAPLES Center crowd off of their feet for the first time tonight. Although Odom hasn’t scored yet himself, he has been extremely aggressive on both ends of the floor to open up the game. Based on his tremendous playoff series the past two years, no one should be surprised.
Inactives for Tonight’s Game:
Kings: Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Brad Miller
Lakers: Andrew Bynum, Trevor Ariza, Coby Karl
1st Quarter:
11:00 The Lakers deliver on their first two possesions of the game, the first a nifty mid-range jumper off glass for Pau and the second, an uncontested dunk from Odom after a great pass by Kobe. The STAPLES Center crowd seems extra pumped up tonight, obviously aware that the Lakers have a chance to secure the number one seed in the Western Conference with a win tonight.
10:07 The hot start continues as Lamar Odom is the latest Laker to throw it down for an early 8-0 lead and his fourth point of the night. Gasol also has two points for the Lakers who have come out with a focused, business-like attitude in the opening minutes of the game.
8:51 Turiaf enters the game early tonight, replacing Lamar after he picked up his second personal.
7:23 The Lakers’ exceptional interior passing continues with Vladi the recipient of a great pass in the lane for yet another uncontested layup just one play after Gasol broke loose inside for a wide-open dunk. Pau has six points so far to lead the team, followed by Radmanovic’s four.
Inactives for Tonight’s Game:
Spurs: Robert Horry, Ian Mahinmi, Brent Barry
Lakers: Trevor Ariza, Coby Karl, Andrew Bynum
1st Quarter:
9:39 Lamar Odom finally scores the first points of the game for the Lakers, hitting two free throws after being fouled by Oberto. Prior to the makes, the Spurs had opened the game on a 7-0 run, capped by a jumper in the lane from Parker. It’s only been a little over two minutes, but it looks like the Lakers might be a little groggy considering the early start time and their emotional win over New Orleans on Friday.
9:12 Oberto picks up his second foul already, sending veteran Kurt Thomas into the Spurs’ lineup.
8:38 One minute after picking up the Lakers’ first points of the game, Odom connects on the Lakers’ first field goal of the game–an uncontested dunk for his team-leading fourth point of the night. So far, it looks like Popovic is matching Thomas up against Odom–a matchup the Lakers would be wise to take advantage of.
