Just a few quick notes from Phil Jackson after Monday’s practice, as the players and coaches quickly made their way over to the Lakers Holiday Party:
Jackson had this to say about the starting lineup since Luke Walton took over for Vladimir Radmanovic: “I don’t think wins are particularly what is the measure, but we’ve won the games. I thought we got off to a slow start yesterday (vs. Minnesota), but I thought it was a good start. We did what we wanted in controlling the pace and getting the ball inside.”
Jackson said he isn’t sure how his starting lineup will look as the season goes on, but mentioned that the Lakers were the only team in the NBA to start the same group of guys for 20 games.
At the end of practice, Jackson sometimes goes to a free throw shooting drill that doubles as conditioning: “We haven’t done this drill for a while because we’ve been playing a lot of games and saving legs, but it’s a good team drill, because everyone has to pitch in. We have to shoot over 75 percent, so whatever the percentage is of the group that’s out there on the floor, they have to make that percentage.” In this case, since Pau and Kobe weren’t on the floor, only three players could miss, and miss they did. No name naming here, but three of the better shooters on the team all missed shots that caused the team to run. Jackson used the drill in part because of L.A.’s missing 14 free throws against the Kings on Friday night.
