There are many factors that have contributed to the Lakers’ solid 21-11 start; From Andrew Bynum’s emergence, the growth of the Lakers’ bench, the return of Derek Fisher and the continued brilliance of Kobe Bryant–all have played a large role in helping the Lakers to the seventh best record in the league more than a third of the way into the season. However, arguably the most important factor so far is one that crosses many statistical boundaries: balance. More than any other season in the post-Shaq era, this Lakers team is playing true team ball and the results are showing up in the standings.
In fact, heading into tonight’s road battle against the Grizzlies, the team has an impressive 18-3 record when they match or exceed their opponents’ assists numbers. Conversely, the Lakers are only 3-8 when the opposite is true. What is most surprising about the number is not the stat itself, but the regularity by which the Lakers are out-assisting their opponents this season. Credit the return of Derek Fisher to help stabilize the offense, Jordan Farmar’s knack for finding teammates and perhaps, most importantly, Kobe’s newfound dedication for getting his teammates involved early and often.
In addition, the Lakers proficient offense–currently third in the league in scoring at over 107 points per game–features significantly more weapons on offense, especially with the dramatic impact Bynum has had in the post this season. Like the assist numbers, the Lakers also do well when everyone gets involved, evident in their 15-3 record when five or more players score in double figures, including 7-0 when all five starters do. This year’s bench is also more than capable of producing multiple players in double digits, as seen in the team’s astounding 73 bench points in November versus Chicago in which five reserves scored at least 10 points.
While the numbers may surprise some, with each Lakers victory, they are becoming less an aberration and much more a regularity in Lakerland.
